The team was founded in 1972 under the name of Quebec Nordiques in the World Hockey Association. After the merger of NHL-WHA in 1979, the Nordiques became the member of National Hockey League. In the 1994-1995 season, they were purchased by the COMSAT Entertainment Group of Denver, so they were relocated to Denver and their name was changed the Avalanche. In first of Denver not only they won the Pacific Division, they also won Stanley Cup Final defeating Florida Panthers. This made them the first team of NHL, winning the Stanley Cup in the season after being relocated. Now their home arena is Pepsi Center.

In 2013-2014 Colorado Avalanche played their 35th season for the National Hockey League, under Coach Patrick Roy and General Manager Greg Sherman. They were Central Division Champions and they positioned second in the Western Conference. They made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after 2010. The Avalanche’s record at the end of the season was 52-22-8 and their home record was 26-11-4. The goaltender Semyon Varlamov on Oct 30, 2013, turned himself into Denver police station on assault and kidnapping but the chargers were later dismissed.

In 2014-2015 which was Colorado Avalanche 36th season of the National Hockey League, under coach Patrick Roy and new General Manager Joe Sakic. Despite the fact that they have earned 90 points but they were not able to qualify for Stanley Cup Playoffs. They came to 7th position of Central Division and on 12th position in Western Conference. Their record at the end of the season was 39-31-12 and home record of 23-15-3.
